Lives in Cricket No 42 - Frank and George Mann
11 Mann, Crossman and Paulin: 1819 to 1914 that month. 4 The death of James Hiscutt Crossman junior in 1908 created a vacancy on the board of directors and in 1909 Edward John Mann, who had been working at the brewery full-time since 1905, was appointed director. 4 The Times described him as ‘a leading Norfolk landowner and a generous subscriber to charities’. He was chairman and later a ‘life governor’ of the London Hospital, then a voluntary institution and the biggest hospital in East London, with its main buildings on the Whitechapel Road. At one time it had wards named ‘Mann’, ‘Crossman’ and ‘Paulin’. The Mile End Road frontage of the Albion Brewery in 2014, now listed for its architectural importance. Much of the rest of the brewery, which closed in 1979, has been demolished.
