Lives in Cricket No 40 - Edwin Smith
135 Postscript Edwin played his last cricket match in 2008, at the age of 74. It was almost 60 years since he had first played for Grassmoor and his oldest grandson, Mark Burton, was captaining the Matlock Cricket Club Sunday side. They were short of players and Edwin was asked if he would consider turning out for them against Clowne. He bowled ten overs and took three for nine, doing so well that he was asked to play for their second team the following week, in a league game against Darley Abbey. He took five for 34. Class, after all, is permanent.
