Lives in Cricket No 4 - Ernie Jones
Unfortunately he had a heavy cold and did not do himself justice in taking just three lower-order wickets in the first innings, but then worked hard for six wickets against Victoria in Melbourne. However, he was flogged in his final Sheffield Shield match in Sydney where Trumper and Duff posted an opening partnership of 298 in 133 minutes. Jones finished with 1 for 118 from 35 overs in that match, took 10 wickets at 43.60 in three games for South Australia, and bowled a mere thirteen overs without reward in club games, before migrating with his family to Western Australia. He had taken 248 wickets at 26.20 in 47 matches for the state and 212 wickets at 13.03 in Adelaide club cricket. For South Adelaide and North Adelaide he had appeared in three premiership teams and won the SACA club bowling averages four times. Jones departed on the steamer Buninyong in late February, and missed South Australia’s last two first-class matches against Victoria, as well as the hastily arranged game played at the Adelaide suburban ground of Unley Oval against Lord Hawke’s Eleven, in late March.
