Lives in Cricket No 39 - Alec Watson
39 The Rowley Years middle-order batsman, noted for his hard hitting. Yet his batting average was only 13.52, little better that Watson’s career average, and he did little bowling; which perhaps illustrates, in some way, the difference in status and expectation of performance between an influential amateur, a member of the county club, and the humbler professional, its employee. A professional with the same figures as Rowley could hardly expect to be engaged for long by a first-class county.
