Lives in Cricket No 38 - Lionel Robinson
95 of appearances against the Ramblers. The match was dominated by the Ramblers’ GS Incledon-Webber who scored 130 (out of 198) in his first knock and took six for 44 in the first innings of Leveson-Gower’s XI. Alas, that early six-wicket haul against the ‘Posties’ flattered to deceive, and Everard Gates proved to be almost as inept a performer on the cricket pitch as his predecessor and his relatives. Unlike Lionel, he did put himself on to bowl quite regularly and managed to snaffle an occasional wicket or two 65 but his batting was every bit as mediocre as Robinson’s; despite batting himself up and down the order he found making a double-figure 65 Gates’ total haul of 26 wickets in 1926 were relatively expensive at 17.30 apiece. The death of Lionel Robinson and the fate of his cricket ground South Norfolk CC at Blackwell, 1926. (Philip Yaxley) South Norfolk CC 1920s.
