A year or two later however, Kynaston drew up some more draconian rules to govern professionals employed by MCC, and Clarke, so Ashley-Cooper states in Lord’s and the M.C.C., was not happy; he and Dorrinton resigned their posts. In 1848, Clarke had included an amateur cricketer, R.T.King, in most of his AEE matches. In 1849, for the first half of his programme he selected Henry Lindow (1824-1887), educated at Rugby and Oxford. Haygarth thought Lindow a poor player, but in 1848, Lindow had played against the AEE for Worcestershire and hit the highest score for his side in Worcestershire’s second innings; a few days later he made 23 out of Worcestershire’s total of 49, facing the professional bowlers Nixon and Roby – George Parr played Incredible Success of the All-England Eleven Second-day scorecard published by Phillips and Co of the match Sussex v MCC, played on the seafront Brunswick Ground at Hove in August 1849. John Wisden took thirteen wickets in all and gave Sussex a win by ten wickets.
