24 warrant a place in the full University side, playing its traditional opening first-class match against C.I.Thornton’s XI, starting on 10 May. With his opponents including W.G.Grace himself, with F.S.Jackson and G.H.Hirst of Yorkshire, Mitchell opened against Hirst and J.J.Ferris, top scoring for his team with 67 admirable runs. Rain later prevented either side having a second innings. It was W.G., in his 625 th first-class match, who had him lbw, a wicket that may have given the great man of cricket much satisfaction because he was quickly to praise the batting quality of the freshman.
