Henry Tilly, who went on to play for Middlesex on Syd’s recommendation, remembers with pleasure being coached by him, as does ACS member Colin Moor who was still at school at the time. Colin recalls that when Syd saw how sharply he spun the ball he advised him to keep the batsman guessing by varying the amount of turn and not always doing too much.
