124 Coach end of his career. It was a fine choice as John would go on to serve them in many capacities, and was still actively involved over 30 years later. And Jack still hadn’t finished playing. Three years later, now well into his sixty- second year, he captained MCC against the National Association of Young Cricketers at the Victoria Ground, Cheltenham. Jack was a keen photographer. He also made 9.5mm films of his visits to the Caribbean and South Africa. In 1953 when he played in a testimonial match at Stafford for Sydney Barnes, he filmed the great man, then aged 80, bowling the first ball of the match – a precious piece of cricket history. In later years he would also make tape recordings of talks with former colleagues and play them at cricket society meetings. Jack was clearly a man for whom technology held no fears. 173 173 At the time of writing the whereabouts of some of these various recordings is unclear.
