Lives in Cricet No 33 - Jack Robertson and Syd Brown
119 Final Summer for the England team with similar career averages to Jack’s who were also worthy of consideration, albeit that Simpson, and Sheppard and Dewes at Fenner’s, had the advantage of playing some of their cricket on fairly benign home pitches. Simpson and Sheppard (who was much younger than Jack) had reasonably successful England careers. Both made centuries against Australia and were clearly worth their place. Ikin, only a year younger than Jack, was also a useful wristspinner and brilliant fielder which no doubt helped his cause. In 1951 he became Hutton’s first regular post-Washbrook partner, but with limited success. Lowson and Kenyon had relative youth on their side when the search for a Washbrook replacement began and performed strongly during the early 1950s. Although they didn’t succeed for England they deserved their chance.
