Lives in Cricket No 32 - Eric Rowan
76 visit to Lord Belper’s Kingston Hall, the first time anyone had done that. Her Ladyship’s response was not recorded. Van Ryneveld was certainly correct in his view that Eric did divide loyalties. There were those who adored him and would have followed him anywhere, while there were others who felt he went too far and did not appreciate his win-at-all-costs attitude. But no matter which side they were on, all accepted his courage and skill with the bat. The divisive nature of Eric’s character was also noted by one of his opponents. In End of an Innings Denis Compton was very complimentary about Eric’s ability as a cricketer, but felt there was a split in the South African team with one group centering around Nourse and another larger group around Eric. Back in South Africa opinions were also divided, even in the Transvaal Association where Eric was the team’s captain. There were some resignations and even threats of court cases, although what such actions would have entailed is not clear. After Eric’s apology the matter seemed to have ended, but this proved to be only for the moment. The incident would have a dramatic aftermath some months later. Triumph and Controversy
