66 overflowing. Prior to the series no one really believed that the Australians would struggle to win, but, apart from the Third Test, the South Africans were able to offer little opposition. Their best batsmen were still Nourse and Rowan who had both made their Test debuts fifteen years earlier in 1935 and were over forty years old. Not one batsman chosen since the Second World War, in five years and three series, had been able to establish a place in the side and begin to take the load off the veterans.
