ABOUT THE AUTHOR Eric Midwinter social historian, social policy analyst and author, was for seven years President of ACS, he is chairman of the ‘Daily Telegraph’/Cricket Society Book of the Year award, and editor of the MCC Yearbook. Among the many and varied books he has published are several on sport, including his award-winning ‘Red Shirts and Roses; the tale of the two Old Traffords’ (2005). His latest offering is ‘Parish to Planet; how football conquered the world’ (2007). He composed the current text during his patient vigil awaiting Lancashire’s winning of the County Championship outright for the first time since George Duckworth’s day.
