Lives in Cricket No 29 - AN Hornby
96 A Lancashire legend is laid to rest The painful experience, however, shook even his splendid nerve, for, although he remained one of England’s leading batsmen for several years after, his only score against Spofforth was one of 94 for the North in 1884. Earlier in the obituary Wisden describes Hornby thus: For many seasons one of the leading England batsmen, Hornby had an attractive forward style and possessed splendid, punishing powers which he used freely. In addition, he was a magnificent field, and as a captain so firm, keen and genial that he could always get the best out of the men under his charge. His dashing methods, coupled with his obvious enthusiasm – he appeared to thoroughly enjoy every moment he was on the field – made him a general favourite wherever he went.
