ABOut tHe AutHOr Born in Yorkshire in 1938, Anthony J. (Tony) Barker studied at the universities of sheffield, Manchester, sydney and london. He has lived almost 50 years in Australia, most of them working as an academic historian at the university of Western Australia. During three decades there his publications included three books on the history of the slave trade, slavery and antislavery in the British empire and united states, two social and regional histories of Western Australia and the official histories of cricket and Australian rules football in that state. since retirement in 2004 he has continued there as a senior Honorary research Fellow, writing two short books published by Acs and researching two projected larger ones on the American presence in Australia since the second World War. He continues to supervise graduate students in Australian, American and sports history.
