Lives in Cricket No 27 - CB Llewellyn
72 Buck’s first-class statistics for the tour are not exceptional. In 12 matches and 22 innings, once not out, he scored 553 runs, average 26.33 and obtained 30 wickets at 28.46 runs each. He hit three scores over 50 and had ten wickets in a match once, and once a further analysis of five wickets in an innings. These were by no means remarkable figures, but nothing could detract from his performance in the Third Test at Adelaide, when his scores of 43 and 80 were counterpointed by his dismissal, clean bowled, of Macartney, Ransford and Trumper, a wonderful performance, when his batting and bowling talents really did work in tandem. There was, however, an aspect to the tour, which goes beyond an analysis of the South Africans’ individual performances on the pitch. It was rumoured that they were handicapped by poor team spirit. Only their captain and manager were allowed to be interviewed during the tour itself, by virtue of the diktat of SACA, but Sherwell did concede ‘our bowling has been very seriously handicapped through the disappointing form of Ernie Vogler’. This touring side was not a happy family. The magazine Cricket and The Cape Times agreed that the difficulties lay principally with Vogler; his lack of fitness, and heavy drinking were both the subject of complaint and Abe Bailey, his paymaster, cut off funds.
