Lives in Cricket No 27 - CB Llewellyn

24 the fifth wicket for Hampshire, with Captain J.G.Greig, who scored 119. The spectators, delighted at Buck’s performance, collected £9 10s 0d – just over £800 at 2012 prices, and thus a fair old sum for a single performance – for him. It was to be the highest score of his first-class career. In reply to Hampshire’s 538, the South Africans, while batting well, Llewellyn two for 99, had to follow on 192 in arrears. Going on late in their second innings, Buck bowled six overs to take four wickets for six runs, as the tourists subsided to defeat by an innings. Hampshire did not have a match in the next round of county fixtures and the South Africans asked Buck to play for them against W.G.Grace’s London County side at Crystal Palace, Sydenham, beginning on 20 May. Stumped off Len Braund of Somerset and England for four when the South Africans batted first, he then showed his allround ability, bowling W.G. for nine before going on to capture six wickets – though at a cost of 140 runs – as London County gained a first innings lead of 54 and then hit a brisk 88 which enabled the South Africans to set the home side 263 to win. Although the wicket remained true, Llewellyn bowled with great skill, never allowing the batsman to settle. In 31 overs seven batsman fell to him for 101 and the tourists were successful by 61 runs. After these two performances, he was well and truly in the public eye and he added to his reputation in the next county match, against Derbyshire at Southampton; his score was 29 in a stand of 56 with E.M.Sprot. This was almost the amount by which Hampshire led on the first innings, while the Derbyshire batsmen in their second innings could make little headway: in 26.5 overs he dismissed five of them for 76 runs. Finally, he top-scored with 42 as Hampshire struggled to victory by two wickets. By now it was the end of May 1901 and as county match succeeded county match, he did not always sustain the success of his remarkable first month: five Yorkshire victims came, but at the cost of 137 runs, in 45 overs. In the match beginning on 6 June, he bowled 72 overs and five balls against Kent at Dean Park, Bournemouth to capture five for 76 in their second innings. He had also scored 83 first time round, adding 147 with Victor Barton for the sixth wicket. After Hampshire, set 131 to win, had made a dreadful start, losing three wickets for only 12 runs, he hit up 38 and in partnership with Wynyard (59) added 62 to put the home side on the way to victory by four wickets.
