87 Richardson was referred to the match committee. 204 The Match Committee reported back recommending: …that the engagement with Richardson entered into by the committee …should be discontinued. It was resolved to recommend that Richardson be engaged for next summer and that he receive £50 for winter wages. 205 The Committee had reckoned without Richardson’s personal filing system and his knowledge of the workings of committees earned from his involvement with Thames Ditton Cricket Club. He had been street-wise enough to retain that crucial letter written to him seven years earlier. The following letter was read from T.Richardson Dear Sir, In answer to yours of Nov 11 I wish to place my services for the season 1903 entirely in the hands of Surrey committee. At the same time I should like to draw their attention to their agreement with me of Aug 5 1895. That reads: The above agreement to be before the season of 1896 and to commence from the 1 st of May 1896 with the intention of it being renewed as long as T.Richardson continues to play for the Surrey Club.
