Lives in Cricket No 25 - Tom Richardson

110 Bout-du-Monde Dispatches from the Lyon read as follows: The body of an English tourist John [sic] Richardson, a resident of Richmond Green was found in the Leysse Gorge between la Corbière and St Jean d’Arvey. It was kept in a room at the Town Hall and has now been handed over to his family. Death was apparently caused by congestion. The ‘Nicolas-Bar’ is still there, though not under the same name. At the time, the signs outside indicate that it was Nicola’s Restaurant or Nicola’s American Bar, although it is not clear whether some one called Nicola was involved or whether the name of the place arises simply from a Gallic misunderstanding of the apostrophe. It was a modest establishment with a few rooms to let and not in the same league as the adjacent Hotel du Nord et Grande Bretagne. In between was an Institut de Beauté which covered hairdressing, pedicure and massage services. The hotel is no longer such, The ‘Nicolas-Bar’ in the Rue du Casino in Aix-les-Bains, now L’Addict. Tom Richardson spent his last days here. [Archive municipale d’ Aix-les-Bains]
