Lives in Cricket No 23 - Brief Candles
35 Of the Late Frederick J.Hyland, again in Beach Road, the cause of death being recorded as mitral stenosis, a heart valve disorder, with influenza and bronchitis as secondary factors. He would probably have been poorly for some days if not weeks before his death, with shortage of breath and coughing fits well before this. He was cremated at Altrincham Crematorium on 2 March; there is, sadly, no memorial where his ashes were scattered. So passed the man with the shortest first-class career of them all. With his only match lasting a mere twelve balls, Fred’s career as a first-class cricketer was less than a quarter the length of his nearest rival to this title (and that rival may well remove himself from the list in time): Shortest first-class careers, by number of balls bowled in the match Overall Balls Achievements 12 F.J.Hyland Hampshire v Northants, Northampton, 1924 did not bat or bowl 50 D.Cleaver Central Districts v N Districts, Napier, 2010/11 wk: no dismissals 59 59 Abdur Rehman Mohammad Asad Baluchistan Gov’s XI v Sri Lanka ‘B’, Quetta, 1988/89 did not bat, bowl or field did not bat, bowl or field 60 A.Judson Yorkshire v Kent, Sheffield, 1920 bowled 1 over for 5 runs 78 78 Mushtaq Nazir Zeeshan Amin Gujranwala v Sheikhupura, Muridke, 2002/03 scored 3* scored 11* 78 78 Kaleem Imran Kashif Imran Sheikhupura v Gujranwala, Muridke, 2002/03 wk: 1 stumping did not bat or bowl In Britain Balls Achievements 12 F.J.Hyland Hampshire v Northants, Northampton, 1924 did not bat or bowl 60 A.Judson Yorkshire v Kent, Sheffield, 1920 bowled 1 over for 5 runs 105 C.Lawrence MCC v Notts, Lord’s, 1898 did not bat or bowl 312 E.Slinger MCC v Oxford University, Oxford, 1967 scored 12*; 1 ct 385 N.G.R.Mair Scotland v Worcestershire, Worcester, 1952 scored 4* 401 R.J.Richards Essex v Jamaica, Leyton, 1970 wk: no dismissals } } }
