Lives in Cricket No 22 - Jack Mercer

64 being promoted to seven in the order in a rain-affected contest as Glamorgan sought quick runs before declaring. Jack responded with 34 in the space of just a quarter of an hour, but what an eventful fifteen minutes it proved to be as he was dropped no fewer than six times! After the frustrations with the leg strain, Jack’s luck seemed to be changing and soon afterwards, he received an invitation to play for the South against the North in the end-of-season Festival at Bournemouth. He didn’t reply immediately, hoping that an invitation might also come to appear in the Scarborough Festival where, once again, the winter touring party were playing against teams comprising those who were on the fringe of the national side, and others who the selectors were keeping an eye on. But there was no communication from Leveson Gower, or any word from the other selectors, so Jack duly accepted the offer to play at Dean Park to end what in many ways had been a rather frustrating season.
