Lives in Cricket No 22 - Jack Mercer
31 came at Barry in a friendly match with The Pterodactyls, an eleven led by Tom Morgan, the Glamorgan opening batsman, comprising young players from leading public schools who played against the premier clubs during the school holidays. Jack took five wickets in the match, but his haul did not include Maurice’s wicket as the Downside schoolboy was dismissed at the other end for nought. Their meeting may only have been brief, but in the years to come Jack was indebted for the support he received from the gifted Cardiff-born batsman as they developed into stalwarts with bat and ball respectively. A move to South Wales Maurice Turnbull and Trevil Morgan were great influences on Glamorgan cricket, and on Jack Mercer, between the wars.
