99 remember for Jack as, in mid-July, he had also scored a century for a Glamorgan XI in a fund-raising friendly against Newbridge Cricket Club, staged to raise money for Trevor Every and Vernon Bishop – a local footballer who had sustained a badly broken leg. In time-honoured tradition, a blanket was taken around the ground giving the crowd a chance to show their appreciation of Jack’s batting, but in a typically magnanimous gesture, he gave all of the money towards the other two sportsmen who had fallen on hard times.
