55 extended over four hours, resulting in an addition of 305 runs to the score…the only mistake in Read’s fine innings of 247 – the highest he has made for the county – being a chance in the long field at 82. 101 Then, he came within three of that score against Cambridge University at The Oval the following week, on Jubilee Day before he ran out of partners in yet another innings victory. His innings was not finished until the total had been raised to 543 of which number W W Read, who carried out his bat contributed no less than 244. This performance was a more remarkable one following as it did his score of 247 at Manchester last Friday, and we believe two successive innings of over two hundred in important matches are without parallel.
