Lives in Cricket No 2 - Johnny Briggs
Alice, had given birth to twin boys. Remarkably, during the course of this two-day fixture, Edwards, the Worcestershire wicket- keeper, also received a telegram informing him that his wife had given birth to twin boys. Briggs, who had opened the Lancashire bowling with Mold, celebrated his good news with 4 for 44 and 3 for 26 as Lancashire swept to victory by an innings and 121 runs with Worcestershire bowled out for 80 and 49. It was a bit of an unequal struggle – Briggs was already an established Test cricketer, while just two days after the Stourbridge match ended on August 12, Mold, who took eight Worcestershire wickets, was in action, along with Briggs, for England against Australia at The Oval. Edwards, batting at No.10 for the home side, scored only 4 and 9. After Briggs’ twins were born a toy entitled ‘Briggs’s Twins’ appeared on the market. The toy sold well but there is no record of the Briggs family receiving any royalties from its sale. Match double against Yorkshire 61
