29 June, 1899: Played in Test match for England v Australia at Leeds, taking 3 for 53, but suffered an epileptic seizure after the end of first day’s play. 8 July, 1899: Admitted to Cheadle Royal Lunatic Asylum for first time. 28 March, 1900: Discharged from hospital, having made a good recovery. 7 and 8 May, 1900: Played first first-class match since leaving hospital, for Lancashire against Hampshire at Old Trafford, scoring 19, but did not bowl. 24 May, 1900: In his fourth first-class match since leaving hospital, after Worcestershire had elected to bat, took 10 for 55 in the visitors’ first innings at Old Trafford, the best innings return of his career. 30 and 31 August and 1 September, 1900: Played last match for Lancashire, against Leicestershire at Old Trafford, scoring 36* and taking 2 for 42 and 6 for 49. 14 -16 September, 1900: Played final first-class match, at Lord’s for North of England v South of England, taking five wickets in an innings for 200th time. 8 March, 1901: Re-admitted to Cheadle Royal Lunatic Asylum. 11 January, 1902: Died in hospital at Cheadle, aged 39 years 100 days.
