4 and 5 August, 1885: Took 9 for 29 in Derbyshire’s second innings at Derby, his best innings return in first-class cricket until 1900. 5-7 July, 1886: Played in his first Test match in England, against Australia at Old Trafford, scoring 1 and 2*, but did not bowl. 19-21 July, 1886: Played in his first Test match at Lord’s, against Australia, scoring 0, but took 5 for 29 and 6 for 45. 18 September 1886: Joined A.Shaw’s XI at Plymouth, at the start of his second tour to Australia. 19 August, 1887: In taking 7 for 53 in Nottinghamshire’s second innings, reached 100 first-class wickets in season for the first time. 7 September, 1887: Joined A.Shrewsbury’s XI at Plymouth, at the start of his third tour to Australia, later travelling on to New Zealand. 21 November 1888: Joined R.G.Warton’s XI in London, at the start of his first tour to South Africa. 25 and 26 March 1889: Took 15 wickets for 28 in Second Test against South Africa at Cape Town, the best fifteen wicket match return by any bowler in Test cricket. April, 1889 : Identified by Wisden as one of its first set of Cricketers of the Year. 30 June, 1 and 2 July, 1890: Playing for Lancashire against Sussex at Old Trafford, scored 129* and then took 5 for 25 and 5 for 16. 2 October 1891: Joined Lord Sheffield’s XI in London, at the start of his fourth tour to Australia. 2 February 1892: Took Test match hat-trick in Australia’s second innings at Sydney. 24-28 March, 1892: Took 12 for 129 in Test Match at Adelaide, his best match return against Australia: during the first innings of this match he reached his 1,000th first-class wicket. 1-3 August, 1892: Playing for Lancashire against Yorkshire at Old Trafford, scored 115 and then took 8 for 113 and 5 for 96. 11 August 1893: Twins born to his wife, while he was playing for Lancashire’s Second XI at Stourbridge. 14 and 15 May, 1894: Awarded benefit match against Yorkshire at Old Trafford, but this was completed in two days. 30 June, 1894: Reached 10,000th first-class run, while scoring 22 for Lancashire in their second innings against Kent at Tonbridge. 21 September, 1894: Joined A.E.Stoddart’s XI at Tilbury at the start of his fifth tour to Australia. 1 February, 1895: Playing in his 25th Test match, at Sydney, became first bowler to take 100 Test wickets, with 4 for 65 in Australia’s only innings. 17 October, 1897: Joined A.E.Stoddart’s XI at Tilbury at the start of his sixth tour to Australia. 7 July, 1898: Reached 2,000th first-class wicket, while taking 7 for 34 for Lancashire in the Sussex first innings at Old Trafford, only the second player to reach this total. 5-7 June 1899: Played 500th first-class match, for Lancashire against Warwickshire at Edgbaston.
