Lives in Cricket No 19 - Frank Sugg

Chapter Seven Marriage and Family Early in 1889 Frank Sugg married. His bride was Amy Alice Smith who lived in the small village of Stonehouse, near Stroud in Gloucestershire. Frank was 27 years old, Amy an attractive young woman of only 17 years. No doubt Frank would have had other female friends, perhaps even other romances, but it was in character for him to have bided his time before embarking on the responsibilities of marriage and of bringing up a family. By 1889 he was a well-established professional cricketer with two England caps already to his name, and with worthwhile achievements in other sports. Moreover, in partnership with his brother he had started his sports business the previous year and he had every reason to expect that this would prosper and provide financial security in the coming years. It was a good stage in his life to be 62 St Cyr’s Church, Stonehouse in 2010. Frank Sugg married Amy Smith here in 1889.
