Lives in Cricket No 19 - Frank Sugg
microcosm of his season: too often was he dismissed early in an innings or, alternatively, after he made a useful start and seemed to have built a platform for a decent score. Performing rather better in his innings outside the County Championship than he did for Lancashire, in all first-class matches in 1888, Frank Sugg scored 565 runs at an average of 19.48. He did not bowl this season. He had the satisfaction of his two Test appearances but, looking back, he knew that he had not fulfilled the expectations with which he had started the season. There were no more Test matches in England until the next visit of the Australians scheduled for 1890. Frank would, by then, be 28 years old and could expect to be at the peak of his career. Perhaps he would have another chance to establish himself as a Test batsman then. Meanwhile, when the curtain finally came down on the 1888 cricket season, Frank could turn to football and to building up the sports outfitting business he had started with his brother. He was also on the brink of a change in his domestic circumstances. Early Seasons with Lancashire 61
