his place. Both men were regular members of Sir Julien Cahn’s XI. As it transpired, 1935 was Rhodes’ only season, Heane taking sole charge in 1936. He was to remain as captain until 1946, never missing a Nottinghamshire match in that time. There is no doubt that 1935 was a happier year for Notts in general and Joe in particular – not least because his wife gave birth to a son, another Joe, early in the year. Under their new captains, 18 Notts rose to fifth place, winning ten matches. This was despite the absence of Keeton – injured by a passing lorry in Mansfield during the winter and consequently missing the first ten matches. Larwood, too, was still hindered by his foot injury and never bowled at full pace. Six batsmen – Joe among them – scored over 1,000 runs and Larwood and Voce both captured over a hundred 32 Nottinghamshire and England, 1934-1935 The Nottinghamshire side of 1935 which finished fifth in the Championship.
