Although he had long ceased to be active in political life, Michael Falcon retained an interest in current affairs and politics to the end. He also remained interested in the organisation of Norfolk cricket. At meetings of bodies such as the Norfolk Cricket Association he had regularly stressed the importance of sporting facilities and recognition of his work behind the scenes as vice-chairman of the Norfolk County Playing Fields Association executive committee came in 1974, when he was presented by Prince Philip with the National Playing Fields Association’s President’s Certificate at Buckingham Palace. Michael Falcon died on 27February 1976, aged 87, and was blessed with a quick, painless death. He was sitting up at home when a locum doctor, paying him a first visit, made the mistake of mispronouncing his patient’s name, rendering the ‘FAL’ in Falcon as in ‘fallacy’. Falcon testily replied to the effect that his name was pronounced with the ‘FAL’ in Falcon as in ‘fall’ – and promptly expired.
