Lives in Cricket No 13 - AP Lucas

Acknowledgements Writing can be a solitary occupation, so I’m grateful to everyone who helped me along the way. David Jeater of the Association of Cricket Statisticians and Historians initially encouraged me, during the long journey to Derby for an ACS meeting, to think about writing the book. Then, as editor of the Lives in Cricket series, he gave constructive suggestions and unfailing support from the first draft to the final version. The ACS were generous in giving me a grant that covered some of my expenses in researching the book. David Ashworth, President of the Uppingham Rovers, kindly allowed me to see the Doings of the Uppingham Rovers which, more than any other source, brought Bunny Lucas alive as a human being and a cricketer; he showed great hospitality, and was very patient in answering my many questions. Robin Hobbs provided a moving foreword and gave me a guided tour of Fryerning. Thanks also, for their help in various ways, to Philip Bailey, Mike Boyers, Richard Cooper, Tony Debenham, Janice Eastment and Kevin Shaw, Pete Griffiths, Martin Hagger, Tom Hagger, Gerald Hudd, Pat Jeater, Howard Mallinson, Marilyn Mason, Douglas Miller, Dr Veronica Park, Zahra Ridge, Dr Phil Stevens, Jon Vallerius, my former colleagues at Vestry House Museum in Walthamstow, and the staff of Cambridge University Library, Essex Library Services, the Essex Record Office, the Lords Museum, the National Archives, the Society of Genealogists and the Surrey Heritage Centre.
