Although a majority of Australian academics, especially in the humanities, would strongly support his arguments, Ric’s medical studies, coinciding with remarkably crowded sporting commitments in the next decade, were important preparation for the two major alternative careers he would pursue in the 1980s and 1990s – politics and elite sports coaching. 20 1952-1969 Charlesworth Cricket Club, in Derbyshire, was started in 1861, at about the time Ric’s ancestors moved to Australia. Later amalgamating with another village side, the club thrives today.
