Foreword By Ian Hunt Warden of Llandovery College I am delighted to write this foreword, celebrating the life and achievements of C.P.Lewis, one of the most famous alumni from Llandovery College, and a man whose achievements over a hundred years ago are still revered, and celebrated, in the College today. Sport played a massive part of C.P.Lewis’ life and, as someone who has spent many years in teaching, I am acutely aware of the benefits that participation in healthy recreation can play in a young person’s development, as well as their later life on leaving school or university. C.P.Lewis may have been involved in the sporting life of Llandovery College back in the 1870s and 1880s, but even now in the twenty-first century, the benefits of taking part in sport, playing for a team, and obeying rules and regulations are still key ingredients in the wider education of our young people, and are amongst the core values at Llandovery College today. As the authors have portrayed in this fascinating account, C.P.Lewis was able play both rugby and cricket at a very high standard, and this is perhaps the only major difference with Wales’ leading sportsmen and women today. But here at Llandovery College we still value the essence of being a good all-rounder, displaying skills in a number of areas and, where possible, combining excellence in the classroom with excellence on the sports field. At a time when there is plenty of debate at government level about the content of a school’s curriculum, and the role of subjects such as History and Physical Education, this booklet is an apt reminder that we can learn important lessons from the past, and that not all history is bunk! Indeed, in the year when Test cricket has come to Wales, with Glamorgan’s headquarters in Cardiff hosting an Ashes Test, we owe it to our younger generation to give them a good, and proper, 5
