Members of the Cardiff club were clearly becoming more influential amongst the hierarchy of the South Wales C.C. as the Arms Park became the venue for three important matches. The South Wales club’s 1880 season started off with the usual annual trial, a probable eleven versus a possible eighteen, for the ‘London’ tour. Although rain washed out the second day of the match at Cardiff, Lewis took seven of the eighteen’s wickets, with three bowled and one hit wicket. Clifton were the first high-profile visitors to play the club at the Arms Park. It was relatively easy for their players to travel by train to Cardiff, and despite improvements to the train timetable, it was still quite a trek for them to play at St. Helen’s or further west, much as Lewis and Llewelyn would have dearly liked. Nevertheless, it proved to be a good match for Lewis against the Bristol side as he took five for 34 in the first innings, and then three more in the second, before making 39 as he led his side to a five-wicket victory. A couple of weeks later M.C.C. played at the Arms Park. This was their first out-match against South Wales, played at the now A Cup Held Aloft 61
