Lives in Cricket No 11 - CP Lewis
the bowling. Llanelli’s Percy Rees, set to become Carmarthenshire’s leading Minor Counties bat, was bowled by Lewis for 0 in 1898, in a match in which the declining Llandovery were all out for 22. By the late 1890s, both the Llandovery Town side, as well as Lewis and Jones, were not the force they were, and the Town side suffered several heavy defeats, including one in 1898 when they were dismissed by Llanelli for just 22. Perhaps out of a feeling of loyalty to his home side, C.P. continued to turn out for the Llandovery Town eleven, although by 1900 he was scoring little at number seven and rarely took many wickets with his bowling which was nearer slow-medium, rather than medium-fast. 36 In 1902 and 1903 he was missing from the team, as civic and professional duties took their toll. Indeed, he was appointed Mayor of Llandovery again in 1904/05. Perhaps by now it was time for him to fade from the cricket scene, and to enjoy married life with Lizzie, together with their cook and maid in their home on the outskirts of Llandovery. Sporting Solicitor 99 36 The 1901 Census records C.P., his wife Elizabeth and her sister Sarah in a house on the outskirts of Llandovery, not far from the College, with a 36-year-old cook and a maid, ten years younger. In 1911 his household still had two live-in domestic staff.
