handicap and was a key member of the County Cricketers’ Golf Society, playing regularly with old colleagues such as Derek Underwood and Mike Denness. He had also carved a niche for himself as a regular accompanier of spectators on cricket tours – not the Barmy Army but rather quieter cricket followers whose shared ambition was to see England play around the world. And there we shall leave him: captain of Herne Bay Golf Club, cricket legend, devoted father and loving husband.
