41 AUSTRALIANS u. GENTLEMEN OF ENGLAND. % * F* * 4 The return match between the Australians and the Gentlemen was played at Kennington Oval on June 26, 27, and 28. From first to Jast the struggle was a great one, and the Australians fairly earned their victory. When they went in on the first day the Colonists lost 7 wickets for 95 runs, but the innings was redeemed by Blackham and jlidwinter, who during their partnership put on 8S for the eighth wicket. For the Gentlemen, Mr. Grace carried off all the honours. Considering that lie was suffering severely from a strained leg, his innings of 107 was a very remarkable performance. He gave a couple of chances to Boyle, on the on side, but they were both difficult. In the Australians’ second innings Midwinter was again seen to advantage, and Bannerman scored an admirable 48. At about twenty minutes to one on the last day the Gentlemen Went in for the second time with-188 runs to win. So fine a start was made that 00 runs had been scored when the a ft i 9 ■ tr Mf 0 first wicket fell: An English*victory seemed pretty well assured, but the Australians played up in their best style and carried all before them. One after another the batsmen fell to Spofforth. and Boyle, and when the seventh wicket went down at 130, the result.was felt to be certain. The way in which Blackham finished off the game will never be forgotten by those who were present. In the end the Australians won by 46 runs. Spofforth, nearly always at liis best when there is important work to do, took 7 wickets for 68 runs. Before dismissing the match something must be said for Mr. Cliristoplierson, who has seldom bowled better; for the whole match he’had a better average than Bpofforth.
