38 2nd Inns. Total. 273 233 1st Inns. June 2, Australians 273 _ Derby. Derbyshire 106 127 Australians won by an innings and 40 runs. It was not to be expected that Derbyshire would make a close match against the Colonists, and from start to finish the result was never in doubt. Considering the roughness of the wicket, it was an excellent per. fonnance on the part of the Australians to make 273. The batting was very even, nine members of the team reaching double figures. Palmer made 57 (not out), Bannerman 46, M‘Donnell 36, and Scott and Bonnor each 25. The Derbyshire men could do very little against Spofforth, who had quickly recovered from his accident at Lord’s. Sugg, however, played a capital first innings of 52, and Mr. L. C. Docker a very good second innings of 34 (not out). Spofforth took, in all, 12 wickets for 83 runs, and Gillen 6 wickets for 56 runs. .. 1st Inns . 2 nd Inns. Total. June 5, Australians 174 315 489 Manchester. Lancashire 195 — 195 Drawn. Australians had lost 8 wickets. Heavy rain on the last day robbed the match of a great amount of its interest. Had it kept fine on the Saturday, however, it is doubtful whether the game could have been played out. At the finish the Australians had a tremendous advantage, being 294 to the good with two wickets to fall. For their unfavourable position the Lancashire men had, in some measure, to thank themselves, as they made several • mistakes in the field. Giffen, who scored 113 (liis only innings of over 100 in this country), was missed three times. Notwithstanding this luck his 113 was a good innings.' The ’South Australian was also the most successful bowler, taking 6 wickets for 55 runs. He accomplished the “ hat trick,” dismissing Mr. Taylor, Robinson, and Mr. D. Q. Steel with successive balls, For the Australians, Murdoch made 39 and an admirable 64, M‘Donnell 49 and 3, and Bannerman 36 and 44. Briggs scored 46 forLancashire, Mr. H. B. Steel 41, and Barlow a very patient 28. On the first day, 14,106 persons paid for admission, and on the second day, 17,546. • 1st Inns . June 9, Australians " 60 Bradford. Yorkshire 55 Australians won by 3 wickets. Thoroughly a bowlers’ match, and one most keenly contested right up to the finish. As may be imagined from the small scores the wicket was soft and treacherous, giving the bowlers very great assistance. On the first day three innings were got through, and had the Yorkshiremen taken ail the chances offered in the Australians’ first innings, they might just have won. The highest individual score in the match was 24 by Bates, Spofforth and Palmer howled unchanged throughout both innings of Yorkshire, the former taking 9 wickets for 61 runs, and the latter 11 for 44 runs. For Yorkshire, Peate took 10 wickets for 60 runs and Emmett 6 for 40 runs. , • 1st Inns. 2nd Inns. Total. June 12, Australians « 131 179 Nottingham.
