James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Companion 1885

37 the only trustworthy batsman left to help him was Mr. Diver. Had the Surrey batsman failed, victory would in all probability have rested with Australia. After one bad hit, however, he fully rose to the occasion. In fourteen overs the required runs were hit off, and the Gentlemen won a splendid match by four wickets. The wicket was rather worn, and the bowling of Falmer and Giffen superb, hut Mr, Steel fairly conquered all difficulties. In the Englishmen’s first innings Mr. Steel also* played capital cricket, and some fine hitting was shown by Mr. Vernon and Mr. Kidley. Considering the loss of Spofforth’s services, and the heavy balance against them on the first innings, the Australians were entitled to fully as much credit as their opponents.
