Never before in a first-class match in England hadthree separate-scores of over 100 been obtained in the same innings. The first three wickets fell for 75, and then came the long scoring. Hr. Grace and Mr. Steel carried the total from 75 to 199, Barnes and J[r. Steel took it from 199 to 313, and Barnes and Mr. O’Brien carried it to 435; so that between the falls of the third and sixth wickets, no fewer than 360 runs were put on. Mr. Steel’s 134 was, in my opinion, the most perfect innings played last season. Mr. Grace’s 101 was also a very line display, and the care with which the great batsman played will be sufficiently judged from the fact that he made 51 singles. When lie first went in, however, he was sadly troubled by Cooper’s break. The Australians were very much dissatisfied at his being given in after an appeal for stumping. Barnes and Mr. O'Brien made their runs after the sting had been taken out of the bowling, hut they also showed most brilliant cricket. In face of their opponents’ tremendous total the Australians played a very rash game, and had the M.C.C. fielded in anything like form, the first innings total would have been materially reduced. Owing to an injured hand Midwinter could not go in, so the Colonists had to bat one man short. Of the batting there is not much to be said, McDonnell made some tremendous drives in his 64, andMurdoch, for the first time in the tour, played his true game. The match ended at twenty-five minutes to seven on the second day, the M.C.C. winning by an innings and 115 runs. It will be seen that Messrs. Grace and Btudd took between them 14 wickets. Mr. Studd bowled with very bad luck. Score and analysis:— * . • • M.C.C. w. G. Grace, 1b w, b P a lm e r .............. I. D. Walker, c Spofforth, b Cooper ... J. G. Walker, c Blackham, b Giffen ...
