Swayne,* a first-rate schoo l bow ler (medinin right), always straight and a good longth , w ith a sliglit break from the off, and a puzzling variation o f p a c e ; m ight make a good bat if he w ou ld take more trouble. A. L. Watson, a good bat, possessing great patience and a strong defence, though his style is a little cramped by a p re jud ice against forward p lay . A good field and safe catch (cap t . for 1885). G. M. Jones bats in cap ita l style, especially to fast bow ling ; has p lenty of h itt ing pow er , and a fa ir d e fen c e ; must learn to adapt his style to slow b ow l in g ; a safe field, though rather slow . C. H. Nicholls, a very steady bowler (slow r igh t ) , w ith a good deal o f f*pin and break, but the hard wickets did not suit h im ; a careful bat, w ithout m u ch style ; an excellent field at point. A. G. Watney can h it hard, and m ight make a good bat if he would not draw away from his w ic k e t ; a fair field, and occas iona lly bowls. E . H. Coles,* as a bat was too nervous to do himself ju s t i c e ; bow led fast r igh t , w ith a h igh de livery , and a good deal of spin, but was too erratic ; a safe catch in the long field. B. Ta lbot * m ight become a good bat i f he would on ly w a tch the b a l l ; an erratic bow ler (slow right), who could bowl a difficult ball, and proved very useful. C. L . Hemmerde, a clean hitter, with a weak defence ; moderately good field. F. H. B irch * bow led fast right, with an easy delivery, but though straight, his bow ling was generally overp itched , H. Lyon kept wicket for the eleven and was very qu ick on the off s id e ; when he learns to watch the ball more carefu lly w il l make a gcod bat, as ho has a p re tty style and some taking strokes. J.
