H. Leaf (cap t.) (16.7) was undoub ted ly the best b ow le r in the team ; slow left h a n d ; keeping* an ex ce llen t length ; as cap ta in , m anaged his team most satisfactorily. G. Martineau (15.2) batted cons isten tly w e l l ; a strong h itter on the off side; is a straight medium b ow le r ; good field. L. J. F ish (19.5) g en e ra lly w en t in first, and his steady defence p roved most s e rv icea b le ; an en e rge t ic field , and straight medium pace bowler. W. H. M. Frere (5.5) was not so su ccess fu l as was expected , but played some fine inn ings towards the end o f the sea son ; takes the w ick e t well. B. T. Hodgson (28.8) went in f ir s t ; was a regu lar scorer, p la y in g s tead ily , an d in n ic e s ty le ; is a very fair medium fast bow ler . F . W . B lenk iron (28.8), the fa s t b ow le r o f the team; this, with his v e ry hard h itt in g powers, rendered h im one o f the most dangerous men on the side. F. E. R ow e (36.7), as his average shows, was the greatest run-getter of the eleven ; a fine field, and fa ir s low b ow le r . W . M on cre iffe (11) has, perhaps, the best style in the team , and on a good w ick e t w ou ld score aga inst an y b ow l in g ; performed the onerous duties o f w icket-keeper most e f fe c t iv e ly . M. J . R enda ll (9), the hardest hitter o f the team ; a good field, and fine th row er . H . B u ry (6.5), the finest field in the team, and a q u ick run -getter i f a llowed to stop . E . F . Dent (5.5), usefu l as a straight fast bow ler, and as a bat w i l l doubtless im p r o v e w ith p r a c t i c e ; good field.
