James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Companion 1885

148 W IT H TH E CONT INUAL F IN E "WEATHER la s t summ e r bats men were bound, to score heavily, but the number of cricketers who made over 1 ,0 0 0 was only eight as against nine in 1883 It should be stated that, as the Australians only took part in one match beyond their own fixtures, their names have not been included in the accompanying table. Six batsmen who reached the coveted 1,000 in * 1883, repeated the feat last year—Mr. W. 0 . Grace, Mr. W. W.’ Head TJlyett, Barnes, Bates, and Hall. The place of honour fairly belongs to Mr. A. G. Steel, who, with an aggregate of 967, can show the fine average of 38.17. His two great innings against the Australians at Lord’s —.134 for the M.C.C. and 148 for England—can rarely have been surpassed. Mr. W. G. Grace was in better form than at any time since the autumn of 1880, and, good as were his performances, he would certainly have done better but for a couple of unfortunate accidents. It was his distinction to make three innings of over 1 0 0 against the Australians. Lord Harris, it will he seen, has the largest aggregate—1,417—and the fine average of 33.31. He has, perhaps, never played better cricket. Mr. W. W. Bead played finely, but was not so consistently successful as in 1883. His average has fallen from 47.22 to 29.9, hut it must be remembered that he was more often opposed to the best howling than in the previous year. Ulyett achieved his greatest successes in the Gentle- men and Players’ matches. I 11 these representative encounters, indeed, no professional batsman has ever made so many runs in one season. Barnes commenced most brilliantly, but at the height of the season was so much off his game that he was left out of the England eleven at Lord’s. Scotton has the splendid average of 34.13, and has made a greater advance in reputation than any of his brother players. * Abel, R ............... Armstrong-, II. ... Asber, A. G. G. Attewell, W.
