All through the match the wicket was slow and difficult, and the Haileybury boys, although they reaped considerable benefit from winning the toss, deserved great praise for their score. Mr. E. B. H. D’Aeth (27) and Mr. J. B. Barton (18) made 38 runs for the first wicket, and Messrs R. P. Spurway (18) and G. H. G. Alexander (14) did fairly well, but the remarkable part of the game was the scoring by the last four batsmen of whom Mr. H. S. Arkwright made 27, Mr. R. G. Pollock 21, Mr. R. H.’jy Smithson 45 (not out), and Mr. T. M. Usborne 11. Mr. Pollock and Mr. Smithson put on 50 for the ninth wicket, and the latter and Mr. Usborne added the same number of runs before the innings closed. Wellington failed completely in the first innings against the .bowling of Messrs. Spurway and Campbell. These two divided the wickets, only 8 runs being hit from the latter bowler. After following on, Wellington did somewhat better, Prince Christian Victor batting steadily for 26, and receiving most support from Mr. A. C. M. Croome (16) and Mr. E. W.
