James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Companion 1885
142 A very great contrast to the encounter of the previous summer, whei a grandly contested game ended in a draw. In the match under notice 1 the Rugbeans, going in against the small score of 130, failed so completely against the bowling of Mr. Sale (right hand, above medium pace), that in an hour and a quarter they were all out and had to follow on, the exhibition of batting being one of the poorest seen for a long time. In the second innings of Rugby, Mr. Bowden-Smith scored 30, Mr. Barbour 30 (notout) and Mr. Coles 18, but the issue of the game was never in doubt. The feature of the match was undoubtedly the bowling of Mr. Sale, who sent down 4 7 overs, 24 maidens, for 48 runs and 1 2 wickets. Mr. L. 0 . Meyrick whose unwearied defence had earned him so many admirers in 1883, scored 45 and 6 (not out) by excellent cricket. In the first innings he went in first, and was last out. The fielding, especially that of Marlborough, was clean and smart. Of the 27 matches played, Rugby has won 18, Marlborough 7, and 2 have been left unfinished. CLIFTON CHELTENHAM. 1st Inns. 2nd Inns. Robinson 72 and 21, Mr. A. A. Glass 49 and 12, Mr. C. E. Pierson 2 and 42, Mr. AB . Champain 35 and 0, and Mr. J. B. Rennie 7 and 22. Mr. R. H.
