WINCHESTER. . , . . 1st Inns. 2nd Inns. Total. June 27, Eton 54 133 187 Winchester. •Winchester 4 ‘ 84 101 185 Eton won by 5 wickets. ; 4 After two years of crushing defeat in their encounter with the Wykehamists, the Etonians succeeded in reversing the verdict, the victory of the Light Blues being a peculiarly creditable one. On the first day Winchester headed Eton by 30 runs, and made 85 for 8 wickets, the only six double figure scores, among the 28 wickets which fell, being all made for the home team. Another defeat for Eton thus appeared most probable, but on the Saturday, although no batsmen scored 20, the play of the Etonians was very consistent, and the runs were hit off for the loss of half the wickets. In the first innings of Eton, Messrs. Swayne and C. H. Nicholls howled unchanged, the former taking 7wickets for 23 runs, and the latter 3 for 26, while the chief scorers for Winchester were Mr. J. M. Jones (31 and 3), Mr. P. Humphrey (0 and 26), Mr. E. H. Coles (4 and 18), and Mr. A. L. Watson (6 and 16). The howling honours of the Light Blues, were shared by Mr. Mordaunt, who took 5 wickets for 41 runs, Mr. Eorster, 5 wickets in the first innings at a cost of 21 runs, and Mr Martin 5 in the second innings for 44 runs. Sixteen by Mr. Eorster, 16 bv Mr. Soames, and 15 (not out) by Lord George Scott were the longest innings played for Eton, no one making 10 on the first day of Of the 55 matches now played, Eton has won 36 and Winchester 17 ; the match in 1845 resulted in a tie, and that in 1865 was left unfinished. m rj r 1 u t l i f * • • • 1 1 i l l l r • f July 30, Lord's.
