' * =*= r• SOMERSETSHIRE Hon. Sec., Edward Western, Esq., Grammar School, Langport, Somersetshire. At one time Somersetshire hoped to take rank among the first-rate counties, hut on present form at least they must still remain in the second-class.. Like Hampshire, the weakness of the eleven last season was in howling. Messrs. Newton, Terry, and Cliallen worked untiringly’for the County, hut Mr. W. N. Hoe heads the list of batting averages by reason of his innings of 132 against Hampshire at Bath. All the four important engagements—the Jfcxome-and-home matches with Lancashire and Kent—ended in decisive defeat. The County did not meet the M.C.C., and refrained from the experiment of playing the Australians, Mr. E. W„ Bastard, of the Oxford University eleven, had to bear the brunt of the howling, and though occasionally he met with success, he did not show to nearly such great advantage as when playing for his University. Matches played, 6—won 1, lost 5. ’•♦ « • % »« +9 M ay 8, T au n ton . Aug . 7, Sou tham p ton . ■ ' . RESU LTS OF M ATCHES . .
