James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Companion 1885
119 O T H E R C O U N T I E S . HAMPSHIRE. President, The Earl of Northesk. Captain, A. H. "Wood, Esq. Hon. Sec., Major Fellowes, R.E., Southampton. A three wickets victory over Kent at Southampton was the best performance accomplished by the Hampshire eleven during the season of 1884. In this match there was some splendid batting on both sides, and in the four innings no fewer than 1,122 runs were scored. The batting of the team was, at times, exceedingly good, but the great weakness was in bowling. As will be seen from the figures, not a single bowler has an average of under 20. Hr. F. E. Lacey was only able to play in four of the eight matches, but, when available, he proved of immense value to the eleven. One of his achievements must take rank among the most remarkable of the season. In the meeting with Sussex, just referred to, Mr. Lacey scored 211 and 92 (not out), his batting in each innings being of the most brilliant descrip tion. To make 303 runs in one match is indeed an exceptional per formance. The only other victory gained by Hampshire was in the first match w ith Somersetshire. In this contest also there was some wonderful batting against very weak bowling. Hampshire, with the advantage of first innings, scored the enormous total of 645. Ten members of the eleven reached double figures: Mr. E. 0. Powell scored 140, Mr. F. E. Lacey 100, Mr. D. Duncan 87 (not o u t M r . A. Andrews 60, Bev. G. H. Longman 52, and Mr. H. Armstrong 58. Apart from these two victories, the season’s results cannot be looked upon as entirely satisfactory, and until one or two good bowlers are developed, we fear it will be some time before Hampshire w ill be able to resume her old position among the counties of England.
