James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Companion 1885
115 - - the western county, Mr. Brain scored 113, Pai Grace (56; while for Surrey, Mr. W. \V. Read ma ibel 60, and Mr. Diver 55. The batting was so Painter 133, andMr.W. 0. __made 135, Mr. Shuter 101, A l , . i e . i uniformly fine, that it *ould be unfair to specially praise any one of the four long scorers at the exp^nse t *10 others. Certainly the match proved a very pleasant wind-up to Glouctstei sliire’s disastrous season. M a tch e s played, 12—won 1, lest 8 , drawn 3. Considering how unfortunate were the eleven, the batting averages come out- remarkably well, and give strong evidence that with better fowling the County, when fully represented, would still be able to take a good position. Painter’s advance is extraordinary, his average having risen from 9 to 28.7. Mr. Pullen has gone up from 13.7 to 39 . 4 ,, but bis success was by no means so unexpected as that of Painter. Mr. Brain’s average is 25 as against only 13.1 in 1883. Allowing for the disadvantages against which be laboured, Mr \V. G. Grace’s perform ances for his County were first-rate. Of the bowling it will be sufficient to say here that Woof received most inadequate support. The figures will show the extreme weakness of the change bowling. BATTING AVERAGES. Most it Rung. W. W. F.
